Bauri Tribes culture | Hindu village lifestyle | Hindu women Village lifestyle The Bhoi or Kewat are a caste of fisherman, boatmen, and cultivators. They now work as laborers in agriculture, industries, and other menial jobs. The name “Bhoi” has a variety of meanings such as an honorary title to Gonds, an alternative name for Kahar, a litter-bearer, and anyone who used to carry a palanquin. It is a term more common to South, Central, and northeast India. The term “bhoi” is the name of a caste. Hence, other castes pursuing the same occupation also takes up the name “bhoi”. According to a legend of origin, they are considered descendants of a Brahman father and a Prasar mother. The mother, in turn, is a descendant of a Brahman father and Shudra mother. The original Bhoi in Maharashtra were probably a Dravidian tribe. They are dark and their totems indicate a Dravidian origin. The name Kewat comes from the Sanskrit word “Ka” (water) and “vritti” (occupation) in the sense that they live on or near water. Another origin is from Kivarta, a corruption of the word “Kimvarta”: a person who follows a low (degrading) occupation. They are a landless community. The Bhoi is mostly considered a backward class but in Orissa, they have scheduled class status. Location: The Bhoi people are concentrated in India's Uttar, Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh states. Smaller communities are also found within Nepal's southern border states (179,000), and throughout Bangladesh (7,900). Pakistan Punjab, Sindh. Religion: Maratha Bhois are Hindus and worship Mahadev, Maruti, and Vithoba. They offer fowls, goats, and coconuts to the deities. They believe in soothsaying, witchcraft, and evil spirits and employ exorcists to drive ghosts out of possessed persons. Oriya Bhoi’s worship Mangala, Thakurani, and Jagannath. Gujarati Bhoi worship Meldi Mata and their priests are Audich or Modh Brahmans. There may be no followers of Jesus among the Hindu Bhoi community at present. Customs: Bhois located in different areas has some differences in their customs and traditions. The boy’s father usually initiates the marriage proposal and sometimes he pays a bride price to the girl’s father. They usually marry within their community. Dowry is paid to the groom’s parents at the time of marriage. Monogamy is the usual form of marriage but polygamy is permitted if the first wife is barren or suffering from some incurable disease. Widow remarriage and divorce are permitted. A bachelor desirous of marrying a widow is first married to a sacred tree. They live in nuclear as well as extended families. Women often work to supplement their income. They do not eat food with members of the lower caste. Men occasionally drink alcohol, which is either home-brewed or purchased from the market. Maratha Bhoi usually cremates their dead but children are buried. They eat fish, mutton, and fowl and drink liquor. They hold oral traditions, folk songs, and folk tales to be very important. In 1981, in Orissa state, their literacy level was 33% for males and 7% for females. Even today their educational level is low. They are a financially poor community.
